Meet Paige Hobbs – she’s beautiful, smart, and she just completed her 150th class with us at HIP Fitness! When she’s not taking Pilates classes in the studio, you can find her at University of Houston, where she is studying Accounting. She’s obsessed with fashion, trying new restaurants around town, all shows on Bravo, and of course, HIP Fitness. Paige has attended over 125 classes already for 2017 and currently takes 5-6 Pilates classes a week! One of the reasons Paige began working out in the first place was to balance out her love of food by incorporating exercise – admittedly a huge foodie. Paige first discovered Lagree years ago during a summer stay in La Jolla with her family and has been hooked ever since.
Now that she has 150 classes below her belt, she’s giving the inside scoop on fitness goals, body transformations, and muscle recovery. Here’s a look into our conversation with Paige:
How long have you been attending classes at HIP?
Labor Day 2016 was my first class with Tana so it’s been almost 1 year. Time flies when you’re having fun!
Did you plan to complete 150 classes from the start?
Not at all! It completely snuck up on me. When I first started taking classes in 2016, I was coming sporadically –every class felt like it was my first one and I didn’t like that feeling so at the start of the new year, I decided to make coming to class more of a priority and now I’m completely hooked. I came to class 22 times in March and April!
What were your fitness goals when you first started? Have they evolved throughout the months as you reached certain goals?
Initially my goal was merely to workout enough to keep up with my eating habits—sugar being my greatest downfall. Now I’m embracing the workout more and all the benefits that come with it. I want even more definition in my arms so some days I incorporate free weights into my workout.
Did your workouts affect your diet? (For example did it become easier to eat healthier/were you consuming more calories?
Yes! I’m more conscious about drinking water every day and eating fruits and always having something green on my plate. It’s been a long time since I’ve had a burger and fries or anything on that order because I could only imagine how much I would feel it in class.
What motivates you? What has kept you motivated?
I have an undeniable huge sweet tooth, especially when it comes to macarons, and that’s what honestly really motivated me to start doing pilates again. I wanted to build up the habit of working out prior to my metabolism slowing down the older I get. I’m also motivated by the changes I’ve been noticing with my body and I keep coming back for more to see how far I can push it!
At what point did your friends/family notice a different? (If applicable)
My parents have been doing classical Pilates for years and my mom is very competitive when she thinks she can do something better than you. She challenged me to a competition to see who could hold their plank the longest, thinking she would beat me. I beat her by a minute — I think that was the point she started to notice a difference.
Tell us about the transformations your body has made since you started Pilates.
I’ve noticed a lot more definition in my abs, near the center and certainly in my obliques – I didn’t know my obliques even existed before coming to class! Overall I’ve felt a lot stronger – I can see my muscles developing all over my body and I started noticing the changes not long after I consistently started coming.
Recently, I like to add one spring in some moves or move my foot an inch or two in others – it confirms that I’m making progress and not only look stronger but I am stronger.
What is your go to outfit for a Pilates class? Favorite brands?
Lululemon is my favorite brand – I just love all the different styles they release every week. My current obsession is high waisted pants with cropped tanks—the high waistline really helps me keep myself accountable for holding in my abs during the workout.
Shasi is my go-to grip sock brand. I prefer socks without the individual pockets for my toes and Shasi has plenty of color choices designed that way. My black sparkly pair are my favorite!
What’s the average number of classes you take in a week? And the most?
My goal every week is to take 5 classes, sometimes 6 classes. However, there have been occasional weeks where I’ve only gone twice or not at all because life just gets in the way.
Best way to recover and relieve stressed muscles?
My favorite recovery routine is stretch, bath, and a Bravo show!
What other exercise (if any) do you incorporate into your fitness routine?
Since I come to HIP so often, I only do Pilates. I think kickboxing will be my next endeavor to add in some cardio.
Do you have advice for our HIP clients or potential clients?
Even though it is a very challenging work out, keep going to class! I could barely hold a plank when I started, and now, center abs is not only my favorite part of class but I’ve also started making modifications to make the moves more challenging.
Classes get less confusing the more often you come – you’ll start to recognize the names of the moves and your transitions will be quicker.
Book your classes in advance! I book all my classes two weeks in advance so I can eliminate the excuse of the class being full at the time I want. I make it more of a priority to workout if it’s on my schedule.
